{"id":34,"date":"2005-10-12T23:58:57","date_gmt":"2005-10-12T22:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blog.moveadminister.co.uk\/?p=34"},"modified":"2025-07-24T10:24:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T09:24:11","slug":"web-updating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.moveadminister.co.uk\/?p=34","title":{"rendered":"Web Updating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new feature was implemented in <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> recently, web updating!<\/p>\n<p>Web updating is becoming more and more popular amongst software today, so we decided to jump onto the band wagon too.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, rather than sending out updates of <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> on CD, we now upload the latest version to our web server. On the Help menu of <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> there is now an option to \u2018<em>Check for Update<\/em>\u2019, and when selected <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> will run our web update client, which communicates with our web server to find out if a newer version of <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> exists, and if so will ask if you would like to download and install.<\/p>\n<p>The great advantage of our web update client is that it will only download those files that are newer, so although <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> currently consists of <strong>40Meg<\/strong> of files, it may only need to download 2Meg of newer files, and even then the files will be compressed using compression comparable with WinZip.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This feature was put into action today amongst our testers and so far so good, with those upgrading finding it a very simple and efficient process indeed.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An enhancement to this which we are thinking of implementing is running the web update client automatically every \u2018x\u2019 number of days, alerting the user when a new update is available, rather than waiting for the user to select the \u2018Check for Updates\u2019 on the Help menu \u2013 <em>but one step at a time eh?<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new feature was implemented in <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> recently, web updating!<\/p>\n<p>Web updating is becoming more and more popular amongst software today, so we decided to jump onto the band wagon too.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, rather than sending out updates of <strong>Move Administer<\/strong> on CD, we now upload the latest version to our web server.
